Since the brand’s inception, Audi never stopped investing in Research and Development to offer vehicles featuring cutting edge technologies. These efforts can also be found on the engines, with Audi creating a surprise by unveiling the first turbocharged direct injection engine in the world in 2004, which was the Audi A3 Sportback 2-liter TFSI motor.
The four letters in TFSI mean Turbocharged fuel stratified injection and refers to the Audi technology combining the FSI direct fuel injection with a supercharger or a turbocharger. With a more precise injection of the air/fuel mixture thanks to the FSI technology and the addition of a supercharging or turbocharging device, the engine’s output, responsiveness and fuel-efficiency increase drastically.
Indeed, in the lower rpm range, the FSI direct fuel injection allows a richer air/fuel mixture near the spark-plugs while being kept separated from the cylinder walls. The result is a 15% gas consumption reduction. Moreover, as the direct injection enables cylinder walls cooling by the evaporation of the fuel found in the injected mixture. If you add a turbocharger or a supercharger, the power increase is even bigger.
